Mineola team recognized with awards for culture and leadership at FIRST Long Island Robotics Competition

We are #MineolaProud to congratulate our MHS robotics team "Mineola Wild Reds" and two of our outstanding learners for winning awards at the FIRST Robotics Long Island Regional Competition, which took place March 20-23 at Hofstra University.

As a team, “Mineola Wild Reds” were proud to accept the FIRST Impact Award, the most prestigious award presented at the competition. The Impact Award honors the team that best embodies the mission and spirit of FIRST, keeping the central focus of on the goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders. This award qualifies the team to compete in the 2024 FIRST Championship, April 17-20 in Houston, TX.

Additionally, juniors Julia Manevitz and Matthew Valente were recognized by FIRST with Dean’s List Awards, qualifying them as Dean’s List Finalists and the opportunity to compete in the Championships in the individual category. The FIRST Dean’s List Award honors outstanding team leaders who have also achieved a high level of personal technical expertise and accomplishment.

“It was truly amazing to see the team’s hard work and dedication recognized,” said computer science teacher and robotics team coach Ms. DiFede. “They spent countless late nights not only working on the robot but brainstorming and implementing STEAM outreach activities for the school and community. This group of students is truly exceptional, and I am excited to see what they accomplish at the Championship and as STEAM leaders in the future!"
