During the February winter recess, Mineola High School French teacher Eleni Theodorakis took a group of twenty-five students and three teachers on a trip to France.

Learners were submerged into Parisian culture by visiting the famous Eiffel Tower, the newly renovated Notre Dame, Les Invalides (Napoleon's final resting place), the Arc de Triomphe and Sacré Coeur in the trendy Montmartre neighborhood.
After Paris, the group visited Omaha Beach in Normandy where the D-Day invasion began. Learners watched a movie describing the events from the perspective of our war heroes, toured the museum and grounds of the US memorial and visited the cemetery where the fallen soldiers are interred.

Other historical sites visited during the trip included Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, a famous church and former monastery, the town of Tours and the Château de Chenonceau, home of Catherine de’ Medici, former Queen of France and wife of Henry II.

Throughout the trip, our learners were fully engaged in this enriching experience that offered traditional language and cultural exploration, as well as a deep dive into the historical significance of the lasting bond between France and the United States.

The district is proud to offer these unique opportunities that help to prepare Mineola learners to be global citizens for the 21st century.
