Mineola Learners Put Gandhi’s Lessons Into Action

Mineola High School students transformed meaningful discussions into acts of service during “Be the Change Day” on Oct. 2.
Inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and his message to “be the change you wish to see in the world,” students reflected on the impact that kindness, empathy and personal responsibility can have on their communities. Through class discussions and activities, learners explored how everyday actions can create positive change for others.
To bring those lessons to life, Mineola High School’s 10th grade Global Studies students participated in a creative service project, designing and handcrafting personalized bookmarks. Each bookmark featured inspirational quotes, colorful artwork and encouraging messages intended to brighten someone’s day.
The student-created bookmarks will be donated to the school library, where they will serve as small reminders of positivity and perseverance for fellow readers. By combining creativity with service, students had the opportunity to see firsthand how even simple gestures can make a meaningful difference.
The project was a fitting culmination of “Be the Change Day,” allowing students to move beyond discussion and put Gandhi’s principles into practice. Through their efforts, Mineola High School learners demonstrated that positive change often begins with one thoughtful action.
