Mineola High School Science Research Learners Shine at LISEF

Science research learners from Mineola High School earned significant recognition at the recent Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, showcasing excellence in scientific research across both the Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions.
At the LISEF Varsity competition, senior Sebastian Truong received an Honorable Mention in the Environmental Science category. Sebastian’s project, titled “The Effect of Pseudomonas stutzeri on the Inhibition of Alexandrium tamutum: Exploring Biosurfactant (Rhamnolipid) Amplification,” investigated the role of biosurfactants in inhibiting harmful algal species, reflecting advanced research skills and real‑world environmental applications.
Mineola students also achieved outstanding results in the LISEF Junior Varsity Division, with three eighth grade teams earning top overall placements in the Biology category. Alice Cosgrove, Kamilla De La Paz and Valentina Rafuna captured first place for their project examining the effect of 1% caffeine on the pulse rate of Lumbriculus variegatus.
Two additional teams earned third place honors. Ana Pereira, Meghan Santaniello and Taylor Sarosy were recognized for their research on how 1% caffeine impacts the segment regeneration of Lumbriculus variegatus, while Julia D’Amico, Amelia Deonarine and Leah Perro explored the effect of varying caffeine concentrations on the organism’s regeneration.
The success of Mineola students at LISEF highlights the strength of the district’s science research programs and the dedication of both students and teachers in fostering inquiry‑based learning and innovation.
