Mineola High School Welcomes Author Caroline Bock

Ninth grade learners recently welcomed author Caroline Bock for an engaging discussion about her novel LIE, which was inspired by a tragic true story that took place on Long Island. Centered around the essential question, “How does perspective shape our understanding of the world and the choices we make within it?”, the visit encouraged students to explore how different viewpoints can influence the way people understand events, form opinions and make decisions.
The visit marked Ms. Bock’s third visit to Mineola High School. Learners had the opportunity to hear a reading from LIE, learn about the novel’s inspiration and ask questions about the writing process. Throughout the discussion, Ms. Bock challenged students to think critically about themes of truth, perception and empathy.
As part of the event, learners presented projects inspired by the book. Under the guidance of English teachers Katelyn Bucchio, Brittany Franzini, Emily Gendels, Liliana Ospina and Keith May, students created thoughtful displays and analyses that demonstrated their understanding of the novel’s themes while sharing their own perspectives and interpretations. Their work reflected meaningful connections between the story and the essential question that guided their learning.
The author visit provided a unique opportunity for learners to deepen their appreciation for literature while engaging directly with the writer behind the novel. Coordinated by Instructional Leader Georgia Amigdalos, the event showcased the meaningful work taking place in Mineola High School's English classrooms while allowing students to engage in conversation with a published author. The district thanks Ms. Bock for returning to Mineola High School and inspiring students through her work, insights and conversation.
