Mineola High School learners marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by participating in the school's annual Day of Service and Remembrance. The event encouraged students to give back to their community while reflecting on the lives lost and the resilience that emerged in the wake of one of the nation's most tragic days.

Organized by the Student Service Center, the Day of Service culminated with learners assembling more than 700 lunch bags for individuals and families in need. Through this collective effort, students honored the victims of Sept. 11 by putting the values of compassion, kindness and community service into action.

Following the service project, students, faculty and staff gathered at the school's Survivor Tree for a ceremony honoring those who lost their lives, as well as the first responders and rescue workers who answered the call. Participants reflected on the enduring impact of the attacks and the responsibility of future generations to preserve their memory.

As part of this year's 25th anniversary observance, the school unveiled a new memorial plaque beside the Survivor Tree. The plaque serves as a lasting tribute to the innocent lives lost, the heroes who responded and the strength and courage displayed by a nation united in the aftermath of the attacks.

"Twenty-five years later, the lessons of Sept. 11 remain as important as ever," principal Rory Parnell said during the commemoration. "Our Day of Service and Remembrance gives learners the opportunity to honor those who lost their lives through service to others while reflecting on the courage and sacrifice of the heroes who responded. By coming together each year, we ensure that their legacy endures and that we never forget."

A highlight of the ceremony was the watering of the Survivor Tree. The tradition symbolizes resilience, hope and renewal, serving as a powerful reminder of the strength that can emerge from adversity.

The annual Day of Service and Remembrance continues to connect Mineola students with the values of service, remembrance and community, ensuring that the legacy of Sept. 11 lives on for future generations.
