Mineola Mustangs Marching Band Accepts Invitation to Perform in London in 2028

The Mineola High School Mustangs Marching Band is headed across the Atlantic.
During a special ceremony at Mineola High School, representatives from the prestigious London New Year's Day Parade and Festival officially invited the championship Mustangs Marching Band to participate in the event's 42nd edition in 2028. The band proudly accepted the invitation, becoming the first New York State marching band selected to participate since 1991.
The celebration began with a spirited performance by the marching band, showcasing the talent, precision and school pride that earned the ensemble international recognition. Following the performance, officials from the London New Year's Day Parade formally extended the invitation to students, staff and district leaders.
The opportunity came about in a unique and organic way. Parade organizers discovered the Mineola program through social media and online performance videos, where the band's accomplishments and reputation for excellence captured their attention. Impressed by what they saw, organizers identified Mineola as a standout program worthy of performing on one of the world's most celebrated stages.
Representing the London New Year's Day Parade and Festival were founder and chairman Bob Bone; Steve Summers, chair of the London Mayors' Association and former Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster; Dean Oblonsky, senior American consultant; and Bill Northen and Jonathan Whaley, senior directors of international participation.
During the ceremony, the delegation presented commemorative gifts to the district, including a decorative plate and tea cups from Buckingham Palace. A student was also presented with a City of Westminster pin and a traditional "lucky umbrella," which she has been asked to keep with her until the band's journey to London to ensure good weather.
The invitation provides Mineola students with an extraordinary opportunity to perform before a global audience. In 2028, the marching band will join approximately 10,000 performers from around the world in London's iconic New Year's Day Parade. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators along the parade route and reaches an estimated 340 million viewers worldwide through its international telecast. In the United States, the parade is broadcast commercial-free on PBS.
Adding to the honor, Mineola High School's Wind Ensemble has also been selected to perform at one of the festival's prestigious gala concert events. Held in distinguished venues throughout London, the concerts showcase exceptional student musicians from around the world and will provide Mineola's performers with an additional opportunity to share their talents on an international stage.
Beyond their performances, students will take part in a weeklong educational and cultural experience that includes visits to historic landmarks, museums and other notable destinations throughout London.
As preparations begin for 2028, the Mineola High School Mustangs Marching Band and Wind Ensemble look forward to representing their school, community and New York State on the world stage.
