Innovation and imagination collided in a unique cross-school art collaboration as Meadow Drive second graders teamed up with Mineola High School ceramics students to transform flat, colorful monster drawings into tangible, three-dimensional clay sculptures.

The project began in Mrs. Altman’s elementary art room, where students from Ms. Rodrigues’ and Ms. Maldonado’s classes let their imaginations run wild, illustrating original monster artworks.

Those two-dimensional monster designs were then handed over to Mrs. Lapertosa’s high school ceramics class. Using the elementary drawings as their sole inspiration and blueprints, the high school artists carefully sculpted, glazed and fired the monsters into unique clay figures, capturing the spirit of each original design.

On June 3, the project culminated in a celebratory reveal event at Mineola High School. The young artists traveled to the high school to meet their older mentors and see their monsters in 3D for the very first time.

This collaboration not only fostered community and mentorship between the district's oldest and youngest learners, but it also highlighted the power of creative interpretation and the vibrant continuum of the Mineola visual arts program.
