World-Class Composer Brian Balmages Leads Masterclass with Mineola Wind Ensemble

The Mineola High School band room was transformed into a professional rehearsal hall this Monday as student-musicians participated in an intensive masterclass with world-renowned composer and conductor Brian Balmages.
The two-hour session, held on April 27, provided the Wind Ensemble with the rare opportunity to work directly with the artist behind the music they are preparing to perform.
From the Page to the Podium
Under the direction of Chris Toomey and Zach St. John, the Wind Ensemble spent the morning refining their technique and exploring the emotional depth of their repertoire. Having the composer in the room allowed students to receive immediate feedback on musical interpretation, gaining a deeper understanding of the artistic intent behind the score.
The rehearsal focused on the technical nuances and articulations that elevate a performance for the professional stage. This collaborative environment offered students a unique perspective on the creative process, bridging the gap between classroom practice and professional artistry.
Final Preparations for the Tilles Center
This hands-on session served as the final preparation for the ensemble's performance at the LIU Post Honor Ensemble concert. The collaboration between Mr. Balmages and the students has built significant momentum for the concert, which takes place on April 29 at the Tilles Center.
A Milestone for Mineola Musicians
Selected for this prestigious event based on their exceptional musicality, the members of the Wind Ensemble have demonstrated a commitment to excellence. The opportunity to be mentored by a figure of Mr. Balmages' stature in their own rehearsal space represents a significant milestone in their musical education.
We congratulate our student-musicians and their directors on this well-deserved honor and look forward to their performance.
