About Us

Mineola Music Parents Association, we don't just support the Marching Band, we are so much more.......

The Mineola Music Parents Association is a not-for-profit organization working in conjunction with the Mineola Union Free School Districts Fine Arts Department to support the endeavors of all students participating in Mineola High School Music Department programs.

The Mineola Music Parents Association, (MMPA), provides support to the programs and activities involving students from Chorus, Concert Band, Orchestra, Marching Band and Rockettes and Winterguard. The MMPA's activities include fund raising, hospitality, publicity and communication with the school community. One of the most important functions for music parents is to provide a "support audience" at concerts, parades, band & Rockette competitions and other events thoughout the community.

Chorus (Concert Singers) The Concert Singers is a choral group open to students grades 9 - 12 who enjoy singing. These award-winning students perform at the Winter and Spring Concerts, for special programs, civic groups, NYSSMA and at competitions. Attendance at the concerts is required. Every other year the Concert Singers travel to a location to participate in a Festival of Music Competition. Fundraisers are available to all students to help offset the cost of the trip.

Orchestra The Orchestra is open to students grades 9 -12 that have had orchestra class in the middle school. Those students with experience who would like to join the HS Orchestra can arrange for an interview and audition with the Director of Fine Arts. These award-winning students perform at the Winter and Spring Concerts, for special programs, NYSSMA, civic groups and at competitions. Attendance at the concerts is mandatory. Every other year the Orchestra travel to a location to participate in the Festival of Music Competition. Fundraisers are available to all students to help offset the cost of the trip.

Concert Band Concert Band is open to students grades 9 - 12 that participated in the middle school band. All others who have experience may wish to join pending an interview and audition with the Director of Fine Arts. Concert Band students perform at the Winter and Spring Concerts and at certain parades and events to fulfill course requirements. Students who do not attend these events are required to do projects and reports to make up work.

Jazz Band  A select group of students from grades 9-12 who are hand picked following auditions. Weekly practice leads to a performance that is always a hit to end our musical shows throughout the year. An amazing amount of sound comes from this small group of performers.

Marching Band The Marching Band activity is one of the largest student activities in the United States. In many parts of the country 90 percent of high school bands compete on a marching band circuit. On Long Island, there are about fifteen bands that currently compete, one of which is Mineola. Many other bands perform their halftime shows, which consist of between three and fifteen moves. Competive bands can perform thirty to fifty forms and are constantly moving. We move non-stop for seven minutes, with memorized music and synchronized perfection. Five judges judge the marching band on musical performance, drill design, music arrangements, and most important general effect. Marching Band season begins in August with Band Camp, which is mandatory in order to be in the marching band. There are approximately three to five major competitions and a culminating championship performance. The band also performs at home football games, local and NYC parades. Rehearsals are twice a week from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. The competition dates are listed on the school calendar. Report times for the students will be announced at the Thursday night rehearsal prior to the competition. It will usually be either 9 am or 10 am. Tuesday rehearsals are generally at the High School and Thursday rehearsal are at Hampton Street. In case of rain it may be moved to the High School.

Color Guard aka "Rockettes" & Winterguard The Rockettes were originally organized as a kickline that would perform at football and basketball game half time shows. They perform as an individual organization, and also with the Marching Band. As part of this unit, they will perform at home football games, and local and NYC parades. TheColor Guard and Marching Band Unit have won many awards. During the winter the Winter Guard compete in winterguard competitions. These competitions are generally on Saturday nights, and Sunday afternoons in the winter and early spring. Auditions are required to become a member of this group.
