Mineola School District congratulates Elizabeth Madigan, a first grader at Hampton Street School, on being selected as a winner of the Town of North Hempstead “Bee the Change” Earth Day craft contest.

Students in the Town of North Hempstead were asked to decorate a wooden bee to highlight the importance of bees in our ecosystem. With over 2,500 entries submitted, Elizabeth was one of just thirty winners selected to have artwork displayed during the annual Spring Festival at Clark Botanic Garden on May 4.

The district is #MineolaProud to recognize Elizabeth and to express our gratitude to her art teacher Mrs. Altman for always inspiring and guiding Elizabeth and all our amazing art students.

Fourth grade learners in the Gardening Club at Mineola’s Jackson Avenue School are spearheading the school’s composting initiative and helping turn organic waste into rich soil for planting.

The students are collecting food scraps in barrels around the school and transferring it to outdoor composting bins that were designed and built by students in the high school Fab Lab. Members of the Gardening Club are tending to their compost daily in preparation for planting season.

The compost they are creating will be used nourish flowers and vegetables planted by students in the new Learning Garden, an interactive outdoor learning space that is a collaborative effort of the school’s art and STEM departments.
