Mineola High School Drama Club presents Evan Placey’s Girls Like That. Performances will run Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm at the Theatre at Mineola High School. A departure from most high schools’ repertoire, Girls Like That contains mature language and subject matter and is recommended for audiences 13+ and their parents.

Scarlett becomes the center of attention for all the wrong reasons when a nude photograph of her makes its way into the hands of every student in her school. The play focuses on the consequences of living in the digital age but also reflects on gender equality, group-think versus individuality and the state of feminism.

“This is a gripping and powerful story for our times. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring to the stage a play that explores challenging issues that are so relevant to our students’ lives,” said Matt DeLuca, the play’s director. “When theatre mirrors society and we take the time to examine cultural phenomena, even difficult ones, perhaps especially difficult ones, there is great opportunity for learning and growth.”

Another layer explored in the show is the use of technology and social media and how these things can lead to cyberbullying. There will be a talk-back after Friday night’s show, with a moderator helping the audience to examine what they’ve just seen and to begin a meaningful conversation with the cast and staff of the show.

Girls Like That was named Best Play for Young Audiences at the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Awards 2015 and has been hailed as"... a well-written, immaculately crafted and brave piece of energetic theatre" by A Younger Theatre.

Reserved tickets are available online at mineoladrama.com. Same day tickets can be purchased at the door before show time. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
