Congratulations to Mineola High School seniors Elizabeth Ryan and Erica Sze-Tu who were chosen as finalists in the international science fair, ISWEEEP. The International Sustainable World Engineering, Energy, Environment Project draws hundreds of the brightest STEM-focused students in the world together each year to compete in a fun and collaborative environment and the opportunity to win more than $100,000 in awards and scholarships. The competition will include students from approximately 60 countries with projects exploring such topics as renewable energy, sustainable development and medical breakthroughs.

Erica and Elizabeth were chosen for their project, “The Effect of Locomotive Emissions on Long Island Plant Diversity,” which also competed in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. The project, which they have been working on together for the past two years, looks at the effects of diesel emissions on the biodiversity on Long Island. In May, the pair will compete in Houston, Texas, with the other finalists in this 10th anniversary competition for ISWEEEP.
